River Catch is an artwork commissioned by Gold Coast City Council for the Upper Coomera Community Hub. The facility has a library, aquatic centre and community centre.
The Coomera River flows from the Lamington Plateau to the Broadwater. It is a life source for the surrounding land. River Catch is about landscape and peoples connection to place. It connects local elements - earth and water and memories of river association.
The belly of a fish swells from the building – its handmade materiality closely connected to, and expressive of, its place. Clay for surface colouring is sourced from the river bank and this site. Glazing is used to evoke shimmer and shine, the memory of a river catch.
We worked with Artful Life to create the beautiful handmade stoneware tiles.
